Thanet Star - actively improving Thanet one idea at a time

Top 10 all time most popular posts

The Thanet Star Webfeed alone has, according to feedburner, so far produced 10,990 clicks back to the site for over 150 items. That is an average of 73 (and a bit) clicks.

However those clicks were not distributed evenly. Some posts were more popular than others.

These are the all time most popular Thanet Star posts to date as organically voted for by feed users.

How exactly do you monitor how many hits/clicks/visitors your blog has had? You know, so you can gauge the popularity of the blog?

I tried switching an old blog of mine on Site Meter but since then it keeps on getting its knickers in a twist and telling me that my current blog is the old one, so I'm not getting accurate stats about stuff.

Perhaps you can advice me about how to keep tabs on my blog's performance?

I use three methods.

First I have access to the server logs which can give me a lot of data in a fairly raw form (I use a pair of open soruce packages to turnt aht data into graphs and lists for me).

Second I use feedburner which is where I get my feed stats from. The little graphic with the feed subscribers up top is from there and this article is based on feed stats.

Third I use Google's Analytics package, This is most like you current traffic monitor package but it has pro level features (for free) and some good depth analysis.

All of these are free. Also free is Google Webmaster tools which will give you additional clues about your site and it's ranking for some key phrases.

I prefer that the selection of most popular posts would be based on the number of readers' comments the post has generated a year after it was first posted. Also, a post should be chosen most popular if many other sites are linking to it.

I could also do most reactions, most links, most hits. You have to pick something. I can do most comments Top 10 if you want one. I don't want to people to get board.

Talking of boards I'd rather you didn't abuse the nofollow links to garner links to your forum by giving their keyword as a name.
