Thanet Star - actively improving Thanet one idea at a time

How good is their food?

One of the biggest worries for me when eating in a new place for the first time is that I have no idea what the kitchen is like. Almost everyone has heard at least one shocking story of kitchens you would not feed an animal in and the almost statutory bad chief story. So before you eat out how can you be sure of what it will be like.

The short answer, of course, is that you can not be sure. But that should not stop you from doing what you can to find out what you can. Thanet sadly does not have much by the way of good food review. There is some but when it comes to searching the web you can often come up dry.

Most people ask their friends and whatever story they are told makes the choice for them. Sadly the stories we hear are often apocryphal and always highly subjective. But when that is all you have to go on (hearsay and rumour) we can become like children with chocolate - the source and quality are secondary to the treat's existence.

One source of information is, surprisingly, . I can almost hear you sigh: "Oh them!" but read on. The council employs men and women to go and inspect these sources of food and grade them on their standards of hygiene.

The Clean Food Awards are the result. They are rated on a scale of Bronze, Silver and Gold where gold is the best or in our case the only thing that matters. When it comes to crunch time you are going to want the highest wherever possible.

The listings are divided up into categories so you may need to do a bit of hunting to find the establishments you are considering. Once located and noted you now have a metric to measure them against a bit more objectively. Of course if one establishment is not listed then that can be a pretty bad indicator for it.

I would not advise just using this as the only measure of a place but when you lack any facts this can help you form an opinion. What will also help you form an opinion is that I intend to post reviews of the places that I eat and drink. Admittedly work keeps me from eating out every day (as does a desire to be slimmer one day) but that does not stop me getting out and about and there is no reason why I can't share my experiences with readers.

It's not exclusive to me you can share too.
